You
will find all the major banks of Australia on the Gold
Coast and endless ATM machines.
Bank trading hours are generally from 9.30am – 4.00pm Monday to Thursday
and 9.30am – 5.00pm on Friday. Building Societies are usually open until
12.00pm on Saturdays.
Australian dollar travellers cheques issued by major names such as Thomas Cook
and American Express are usually accepted (with a passport) in large shops.
You may have problems, however, cashing these in smaller outlets. Banks are
generally the best places to go to cash traveller’s cheques as their
fees are lower.
All well-known international credit cards are widely accepted in Australia – Visa,
Mastercard, American Express & Diners Club..
Currency
The Australian currency is the Australian Dollar (A$), which breaks down into
100 cents (c). Single cents may still be used for some prices, but as the Australian
1c and 2c coins are no longer in circulation the total amount to be paid will
be rounded up or down to the nearest five cents. Bank note denominations are
$5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. Coins are 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, A$1 and A$2.
