General Information

The Queensland school year commences each year around the 25th January and finishes for the summer/Christmas break around mid December. Dates vary from year to year. Christmas/summer break is for the duration of approximately 6 weeks each year.

The schooling year for both primary and secondary education consists of 2 semesters with 2 terms in each semester.

Enrolment

Enrolment in public schools can depend on the area in which you choose to reside in. Certain schools, both primary and secondary have what is called school catchment boundaries in place to ensure that only students residing in that particular region may attend that particular school. This works in favor of maintaining and controlling any over population that may occur to any particular school.

Private schools however are more lenient on boundaries as they implement a fee structure that is only affordable to a select group. There is however a quota system implemented by certain school boards similar to that of universities.

School Fees

Each individual school has a fee structure that is generally paid at the commencement of the school year. These fees usually include stationery and text book hire varying from individual schools. It may be required at certain schools that parents/students purchase their individual stationery requires.

Most State High Schools will charge a flat rate for text book hire; however each individual student may incur varied costs depending of the level of subject undertaken. Specialised subjects such as Science and IT tend to attract higher annual fees.

Uniforms

Each school has a customary uniform that is compulsory for the student to wear whether it be a public or private school. Most public schools have a basic uniform of shorts, collared shirts, closed in black shoes and shin length socks for males and ankle length for females.
Private Schools on the other hand have a more formal dress code consisting of a tie, blazer, black leather shoes, hat and knee high socks.
